Narrative
A Montana farming family faces off against others who are encroaching on their land. Forry J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and reverts to the SoCal speaking voice he usually uses. Featured on WatchMojo: Top 10 Summer TV Shows You Haven’t Seen (2018) This series has been on the air since 2018, but I’m watching it for the first time.
The reason I watched the first episode of season one (streaming on Peacock)
Last night I finished the first episode of the first season, which is almost 90 minutes long. As we get to know the Dutton family, we see that they have a strong influence in their valley, but they are fighting back the “invasions.” One of the entrepreneurs wants to build housing. Another from a neighboring Native American reservation wants some of his land and cattle back. To cope with all this and the sprawling ranch, Dutton (who is authentically played by 60-year-old Kevin Costner), has several grown cowboy sons and a helicopter with a special pilot.
"1883" which is a kind of prequel
It was the (fictional) year 1883 when the Dutton family from Tennessee joined a larger group from Fort Worth, Texas “somewhere out west”. They must have stopped when they got to Montana. Again, this is all fiction, but given the ages of the men and the fact that Costner was born in 1955, his character would probably be the great-grandson of patriarch Deaton (played by Tim McGraw) in 1883. e.g.
With sons born around 1875, 1900, 1925, and 1950
"Yellowstone" is a really good show, the actors are all top notch, the cinematography and sound are excellent. It’s just not the kind of show I can invest in and keep watching. It’s hard to find characters with redeeming qualities, and I really don’t enjoy shows that are constantly focused on fights and fights, and often murders, for long periods of time. Now in my 70s, I prefer to spend my time watching "comfortable" stories.
