Watching Ali Abbasi’s incredible film “The Apprentice” leaves you with a sense of anticipation. How can someone be so devoid of feeling and morality, and more importantly, how can someone like that be elected by millions of people to rule a country? Ali Abbasi explores all of these facets in a highly stylistic and captivating portrait of a man who had it all and yearned for more.
The comparisons to movies like Wall Street etc
The Apprentice follows Donald Trump through a specific era of his career, from the early days to the madness that turned into his massive successes in the 90s and especially his relationship with his lawyer, Roy Cohn. First of all, I have to say that this film is GORGEOUS, it has style, the grainy vintage feel of the 80s/90s is replicated so beautifully that every frame is filled with details and colors that pop. The feel of the era was definitely done with care, and the music too, with some great well-chosen tracks that accompany the scenes. The film never feels dead, it is always moving forward.
are super apparent, but Ali manages to make it his own
It’s an unglamorous and super anxiety-inducing portrayal because it’s truly terrifying how someone could be like that. The acting is phenomenal and supreme, especially Sebastian Stan who delivers a chilling performance – this is truly the Trump we’ve seen on TV. If there’s one negative thing I can think of about this film it’s that it perhaps doesn’t explore many of the film’s relationships in a deep way. Some of the film’s characters feel a bit cut out of the narrative, but that doesn’t take away from how good the film is.
