Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and didn’t start developing it again until 2019

Narrative

The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who favors a utopian future, and Franklyn Cicero, a greedy mayor. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of second unit footage and table readings with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falcon and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the 9/11 attacks, because a scene from the script (page 166) "predicted" attacks. The security footage of Cicero’s arrival at Caesar’s office is supposedly from two different cameras, as the small text in the upper left corner indicates.

It’s just the same material flipped and tilted a bit

"Megalopolis" is a movie I wanted to like, first of all, because it’s an incredibly expensive indie project written, produced, financed and directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola – a man who has been planning this work for 40 years and loves it.

so much so that he personally rated it 10/10 on movie platform Letterboxd. Also adding to the atmosphere was the experience of sitting in an almost empty IMAX theater with only a few others… However, except for Adam Driver’s Oscar-worthy performance and the stunning visual frames that looked beautiful on the massive screen. The plot follows the genius scientist Cesar, the revolutionary material "Megalon" with which he plans to build a utopian city of the future – “Megalopolis”. This is one of the central themes of the film – the obsession with perfection far from it in the world and society.

Coppola does not shy away from weaving political comments and reflections on human existence

Envy, jealousy, greed and lust for power are other themes that shape the essence of this work. When I think about the themes of the movie, you would think that this is a good movie. On the contrary, all these themes are destroyed by the narrative chaos, which I think is due to the arrogant ambition of the director to present an unprecedented “megalomaniac”; work of art. The editing and narration are disjointed – the film jumps from place to place without coherence, which became tiresome after only fifteen minutes. Halfway through I had lost interest in the story and was just waiting for it to end.

The only character I connected with was Cesar, thanks to a great performance by Adam Driver

Although most of the cast are well known, it’s hard to connect with any of the characters – most are shallow, and some are completely unnecessary. His ability to convey Cesar’s mania, dialogue and emotions is probably the reason I stayed engaged, rather than the depth of the character itself. The dialogue is mixed – sometimes brilliant, sometimes boring – which made the experience quite uneven. The cinematography is excellent, and if Coppola had focused primarily on this element, this could have been an exceptional film.
